La 2ª edición del Premio Castilla del Pino (1997) fue concedida al Profesor Sir Michael Rutter (Institute of Psychiatry. Londres), por su gran labor en el desarrollo de la psiquiatría infantil.

En el otro extremo, se ha implicado en los métodos de la sociología, con diseños cuasi experimentales y análisis de indicadores locales. Aquí se incluyen ejemplos de estudios sobre los cambios en la salud mental de los alumnos de colegios en los que hace aparición un nuevo director y sobre las causas de los cambios en la psicopatología de los adolescentes. El lugar central de su trabajo lo han ocupado los métodos y conceptos de la medicina epidemiológica y de la psicología evolutiva.
Ha sido editor durante 20 años de las ediciones del tratado de Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Modern Aproaches.
